Lejirma facing stiff competition in bid to defend Golf Park Open

The event has attracted 93 golfers including 23 pros.
Kenya Railways’ elite amateur golfer John Lejirma headlines the second edition of the Golf Park Open set to tee off on Friday 14 April through to Sunday 16 April at Ngong Race Course and Golf Park Club.
The event is a 54 hole-competition played over three days, creating opportunities for the top amateurs to earn World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points.
Lejirma who won the inaugural edition is part of the 70 amateurs drawn to battle it out for the top cash prize and the Trophy. 23 professionals will join the amateurs for the second and third rounds but on a separate cash prize.
The 2022 golfer of the year winner is expected to face stiff competition from, among others Dennis Maara who is buoyed by his maiden win this year at the Winston Churchill event two weeks ago at Thika Sports Club.
Other notables include two former juniors, Kiambu Golf Club’s Elvis Muigua and Sigona Golf Club’s Ngondo Kimemia. Reigning Kenya One, Mike Karanga has embarked on a trip to South Africa to participate in the Western Province Amateur Championship at the Strand Golf Club from 17th-19th April 2023 and will thus miss the event.
The top amateur ladies will also be missing in action as they will be competing at the 54 holes’ event; KLGU Open Meeting on the same dates at Vetlab Sports Club.
